CORTES RIDESHARE

Island Carshare Co-op* is excited to introduce our new project www.cortesrideshare.ca website to the Cortes Community. We have been working with Kootenay Eco Society and Ester Strijbos from Cortes Tideline to adapt, lease, and share the successful rideshare* template KES has maintained for many years.

On the cortesrideshare website there are two options:
• “On island" rides ie. Manson’s Landing to Squirrel Cove, Whaletown to Manson’s Landing.
• “Off Island” rides is for all other destinations: Victoria to Whaletown, Squirrel Cove to Campbell River, Manson's Landing to Vancouver. etc.

As we are a community without local “on Island transit” this will offer an alternative to Cortes hitchhiking when reliable timing, weather etc. are an issue. No sign up is needed and the site is user friendly. Please have a look: www.cortesrideshare.ca

Islandcarshare Co-op will be promoting a casual Islandcarshare membership for $10. The funds will be dedicated to the Rideshare site 1,000 purchase/lease and yearly maintenance costs. Membership purchase/Donations can also be made to IslandCarshare Co-op PO box 264 Whaletown, BC V0P 1Z0, by sending us an Interac E-Transfer to islandcarshare@gmail.com or by clicking on the Paypal Button below.

ISLAND CARSHARE CO-OP

Welcome to the Island CarShare Cooperative, a (non-profit) community service co-op incorporated in March 2013 to serve Cortes Island, B.C. As a local member-owned cooperative Island CarShare is governed by its members and a Board of Directors. The vision of the ICC is to encourage transportation sharing by fostering shared ownership of cars, vans, trucks & bicycles. The main purpose of the co-op is to reduce the number of cars on the road and ferry resulting in reduced GHG emissions as well as reducing the negative economic (i.e. owning, maintaining) and environmental (i.e. air pollution, resource/energy consumption, traffic congestion and inefficient land use) impacts of personal transportation.

Island Carshare Co-op is currently working towards building a casual membership. This $10 membership fee will be dedicated to the Cortes rideshare site. With the addition of a casual membership we are hoping to access and inspire more Cortes residents to help with input towards the rideshare site success, human powered transportation planning ie. access, improvements to short cut walking and bike paths and research feasibility of other transportation sharing options. We are as well promoting casual members to consider in the future a full voting membership share of $500 funds dedicated to a shared vehicle purchase. A minimum of 10 to 15 full memberships are neccesary to support vehicle ownership. Location, and what type of vehicle will be decided by those joining the membership. Read on to see why, how, estimated costs, future, etc.

WHY CARSHARE

Members of Carshare Co-op's report that when you do not have a vehicle in your driveway, you drive less and walk, bike, car-pool & bus more often. When Cortes Islanders living without a bus service or a vehicle (either by choice, economics or health) need a ride, car-pooling with a co-op vehicle could offer a reliable alternative to hitchhiking. For those who have two vehicles in their household, joining the Co-op offers an opportunity to downsize to just one vehicle and actually increases your choice of vehicle based on needs (i.e. work truck, compact fuel efficient car, electric vehicle, van, bicycle) Consider the advantage of bicycling one way from Whaletown to Manson's but returning later that evening using the Co-op car with groceries and children in tow. Most importantly, Carsharing offers young people an environmentally and economically positive alternative to personal automobile ownership, a bad habit our generation continues to demonstrate once you start its hard to stop.

Carsharing is considered by the Sustainable Transport Council of Canada to be one of three important greenhouse gas reduction initiatives in Canada.

HOW CARSHARING WORKS

Carsharing allows people to use vehicles on a short-term, hourly or daily, as-needed basis, paying only for the time they have the vehicle, the kilometres they drive, and a low monthly membership charge.

Individuals join the Island CarShare Cooperative as members. Members of the non-profit coop own and drive a fleet of shared vehicles To place a vehicle in a neighbourhood would require 6 full members minimum, 20 members ideally. Our vehicles would be parked in designated hubs in places convenient to concentrations of our members. Each hub within a 10 to 15 minute walk, bike, of a "critical mass" of members' homes or workplaces. The best case scenario would be 4 or 5 hubs located across the Island with vehicles that could rotate and be returned to any one hub.

The Island CarShare Co-op takes care of everything related to Coop vehicles. We arrange and pay for vehicle maintenance, repairs, insurance, gas, and cleaning. Members reserve blocks of time, as short as one hour through a Coop-managed on-line vehicle reservations system. (land-line access for those without Internet)

Members receive monthly invoices with usage charges assessed by the hour and kilometre, and low membership usage charges. If a member has expenses for gas or other automotive needs while using a vehicle, these are deducted from invoice totals. If the member doesn't drive a vehicle in any month, the member pays the minimum monthly amount of only $5.00
